Today's cars are more electronically controlled than ever before. Nearly every major automotive system is influenced by the computer and your vehicle's electrical system. Electrical problems can cause a wide range of problems, including the need for brake repair due to electronic problems within the anti-lock brake system. Because the transmission control module is electronically controlled, electronic diagnostics are often used in transmission repairs and rebuilds. Similarly, your vehicle's air conditioning system includes several electronic components, such as the control panel and AC control switch. As a result, air conditioning repair and automotive electrical repair are often related. If your car won't start, electrical diagnostics can determine if the problem is with the charging system, such as a bad alternator, if the vehicle needs a starter replacement, or if there is another malfunction causing the problem.

About automotive electrical systems

All electrical circuits operate according to the laws of physics. Ohm's law, which describes the relationship between amperage, current and voltage, governs the operation of automotive electrical systems in particular. This law allows us to use the information we have about two of the variables to test the third unknown variable.

Electrical system terminology:

  • Current - The flow of electrons or the movement of electrical charge within an electronic circuit.
  • Direct current (DC) - All electrons flow in the same direction.
  • Alternating current (AC) - the directions of the electrons change according to a wave pattern.
  • Bridge rectifier - converts alternating current (AC) from the alternator to direct current (DC) to charge the car battery and power other important car systems.
  • Amps are the units used to measure electrical currents. An ammeter is used to measure amperes.
  • Voltage - measured in volts, voltage refers to the electromotive force that causes current to flow through a circuit.
  • Ohms - resistance in an electrical flow is measured in ohms.

Components of an electrical system:

  • Alternator - generates direct current (DC) to charge your car's battery and power other electrical components of the car.
  • Battery - powers the car's starter motor and ignition, as well as assists the alternator in powering other electrical components of the car as needed.
  • Starter motor - starts the vehicle's engine when the key is turned in the ignition.
  • Wires - conductors of electrical circuits. The amount of current a wire can carry is proportional to its size.
  • Wiring harness - set of plastic or metal clips that hold a group of wires together and serve as connectors.

  • Power-adjustable windows and seats

Common automotive electrical circuit faults:

  • Open circuits - A break in the circuit (commonly caused by faulty connections) interrupts the flow of current and can render the automobile's electrical components connected to the circuit inoperable. The primary causes are:
    • Improper connection
    • Disconnected fuse
    • Faulty component
    • On/off switch
  • Ground Shorts - When a wire comes in contact with ground due to damaged insulation, the current is grounded prematurely.
  • Power short circuits - These are voltage short circuits between two circuits or between one branch of a circuit and another.
  • High resistance: can cause the circuit load to operate inefficiently or not at all. Root causes are:
    • Wire fracture.
    • Corroded or contaminated connections
  • Low resistance - can cause wires, controllers or other circuit components to be damaged. Root causes are:
    • Missing or malfunctioning loads/resistors.
